Ian Alaman
LinkedInIan is a Quantum Algorithms Researcher at Qubitera, where he works on variational algorithms for near-term quantum hardware, with a focus on loading classical data into quantum computers. He holds an MSci in Physics from University College London, where his research explored tensor-network representations of 2D quantum circuit states and their connection to near-term variational algorithms.
Ian is interested in the applied side of quantum computing — turning algorithms into tools and results people can use. Previously, he interned at the National Quantum Computing Centre, building IonVision, a Python package now used in trapped-ion labs, and won first place at two international quantum hackathons applying quantum optimisation to problems in finance and life sciences. At Qubitera, he works on the algorithms that turn near-term hardware into something practically useful.
Outside of work, Ian boxes and chases adrenaline through skiing and surfing, with kitesurfing next on the list — a hobby portfolio with a consistently high risk-adjusted thrill.
